Why Internet Dating is the worst

At some point in our lives, a vast majority of us will have used an Internet dating website or app. The modern world dictates that we need everything available at our fingertips and that includes future partners. Now I have no qualms in chatting to a guy at a bar or passing a note to a stranger on a train (#trainguy) but for those of us who are a little more reserved, dating apps and websites are the ideal wall to hide behind before putting yourself fully out there.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve met some great guys through Internet dating and I’m almost certain it’ll find me a husband (ssssh, trying to be positive) BUT there are some absolute wasters on there too. So here are some of the pitfalls that makes Internet dating bloody dire.

You match and…

they don’t message you. WHAT is the point? We’ve both indicated we find each other attractive why are you not messaging me?  Have you suddenly taken another look at my profile and decided I’m hideous?

they don’t reply to your message. OK I get that some guys are concerned we’re all bots or cam girl scams but if I’ve sent you a generally nice, well thought out message, why wouldn’t you reply?

they message you with grossness. Please take your ‘Sex?’ or ‘Are you naughty?’ elsewhere. I want to know which bitch this shit works for and give her head a wobble.

they harass you. Sorry I didn’t reply to your, ‘are you ok with a foot fetish?’ message, please take that as a hint that, a) no I’m not and b) ew and STOP messaging me. 14 ‘Hey’s’ in 2 days is overkill and creepy.

You don’t match…

– guaranteed to be the one guy you fall in love with from their profile and pictures because OMFG they’re perfect for you. Except they don’t like you back.

You date…

they don’t look like their picture. Please don’t do this. If we meet, I am going to see your face. Don’t put up a picture of yourself from 4 years ago when you didn’t look like Sloth from the Goonie’s uglier brother because unless you come on the date with a bag over your head, you’re going to get upset by the look of sheer horror on my face.

there’s no chemistry. Don’t be fooled by the few days previous to the date textual banter overload. Very rarely have I met someone that is as funny/flirty in real life as they are online. This is the worst because your hopes are very quickly dashed when they can only string along a sentence about rugby or what type of gin they like.

You begin seeing each other…

Unless you both agree to come off of Internet dating sites and apps there is forever the paranoia that they are messaging/seeing someone else. The temptation to check their ‘last online’ on these sites is an early relationship ruiner.

you get ghosted. I have NEVER met anyone on a night out who has ghosted me or have known friends who have got with people they’ve met in real life that have been ghosted. But online? Happens all the damn time. Getting ghosted is awful. You’re led to believe everything is going well. You’re getting smoke blown up your arse constantly about how amazing you are and then one day – nothing. I don’t know why this is so prevalent in Internet dating but it’s just awful.

there’s temptation. Unless you’re 100% certain that the person you’ve met online and began a relationship with is ‘The One’ the lure of dating apps and websites is too great. It’s like trying on all of the Urban Decay palettes with no intention of buying one EVEN THOUGH you’ve got Naked 3 at home. Being exposed to so many different potential partners always leaves a seed of doubt in your mind that you’ve settled too early and there could be someone better out there. Even though there’s not. They’re all potatoes.

i understand that a lot of these issues can be prevalent in real life dating too. However, when was the last time you met a new couple that didn’t meet online? I definitely haven’t for a very long time.

Keep strong out there guys! Weather the bad Internet dating storms and hopefully you’ll find a break in the clouds.

I really enjoy your #Vixswipes comments. I met my husband at 20 before internet dating was a thing so I am always really curious about these apps, you are right though most couples I know who recently got together met online. Just a shame you have to sift out so many ‘potatoes’ first!!

    Great post X
